We are breathing liquid, living in a chemical soup again today. I can’t really keep track of the number of days we’ve been in the grip of this heat wave, but the grey, smog that catches in my throat is ominous. The smog cloud has taken on the shape of the blade of a scythe that cuts through southern Canada, from Kingston to Nova Scotia. It originates in the American mid-west and is now moving east. Rural maritime communities inherit the veiled wall of chemical refuse, by-products of the urban consumption patterns farther south and east.
